Spring reforestation works provided employment for 1000 people 10.06

The annual spring reforestation works in the state forest provided employment for more than a thousand people, who helped to plant over 10 million small trees.

According to Tavo Uuetalu, Member of the Management Board of RMK, the local people were very keen to participate in the reforestation works. “We believe that if RMK can provide even temporary employment for a thousand people, then it is our duty to do so,” he said. “Of course groups of interested volunteers were also able to plant trees in the state forest this year, but we did not have a large campaign.”

The average participant, who took part in the reforestation works this spring, worked for 15 days and was also remunerated for the work done. In addition to the 1020 seasonal workers, 190 workers from RMK also participated.

With the help of the seasonal workers, RMK managed to reforest 4510 hectares of state forest – 3640 hectares were planted with trees and 870 hectares sowed with seeds. The majority of the trees planted were spruce with 5.7 million trees, pine followed with 3.6 million and birch with 700 000 trees, all other tree species accounted for 43 000 trees. The largest amount of forest was reforested in Ida-Viru County where 1.4 million new trees were planted on 535 hectares.

RMK is a profit-making state agency established under the Forestry Act, aimed at sustainable and efficient management of the state forest. RMK grows reforestation materials, organises forestry works, is engaged in the sale of forest and timber and organises game upkeep. In addition, RMK establishes opportunities for hiking in nature and forest recreation on recreational areas, in Estonia’s five national parks and 40 other protected areas, and shapes awareness of nature. RMK manages 38% of Estonia’s forests.
