Sale of cutting waste

In Estonia, the demand for cutting waste has been on the increase which can be attributed to the growing share of renewable energy sources and establishment of combined heat and power plants.

Since 2010, RMK has sold cutting waste, with the delivery taking place at the purchaser’s location and contracted the cutting of waste and the transportation of the cutting waste to the purchaser.

In 2010, forest chips and cutting waste accounted for 9% of RMK’s felled timber sales — approximately 0.3 million cubic metres.

The theoretical proportion of cutting waste in all cut timber is 15−20%, the amount of collected cutting waste (collection site has to have a stock of at least 40 m3 and a reserve of at least 30 m3/ha) is approximately 12% and the amount of cutting waste sold, adjusted according to seasonality (based on the condition of soil and roads), is approximately 8%.

According to this model, RMK should have the potential to sell up to 220 000 cubic metres of cutting waste per year. Due to the forest protection restrictions and the limit of economic efficiency, the entire volume cannot be used; however, compared to the level used today, there is plenty of room for growth.

The prerequisite for using the entire potential of cutting waste and brushwood is the existence of a sufficient number of consumers; also the place of consumption should be as close as possible to the resource and the production of energy from cutting waste and brushwood should be profitable both to the provider of wood chips as well as the producer of energy.

In addition to the biomass received from cutting areas, timber suitable for wood chips also grows on utility lines (power lines and gas pipelines). The volume used there depends on the availability of access roads.

The objective of RMK is to contribute to increasing the share of renewable energy sources in Estonia’s energy balance. Therefore, wood chips primarily composed of cutting waste are sold at prices agreed upon through negotiation. Relevant sales notices are published under the advertisements section.
