Lynx (Felis lynx)
Lynx has been living on the Estonian territory since the post-glacial time. The colour of common lynx varies to a great extent. At present, 500-1000 lynx are counted in Estonia. Lynx is a carnivorous animal. In Estonia, its main prey animals are rabbits, roe deer, rodents and birds. The mating season of lynx is in February and March. In most cases 2-3 cubs are born in May who remain with their mother until they are 1-year-old. Lynx become sexually mature at 2 years of age. In most cases the weight is 10-20 kilograms, but old animals may weigh even more than 30 kilograms. Besides the human being, also the wolf presents danger for the lynx.Lynx, except the female lynx with cubs, may be hunted by calling hunt, hunting from hides, stalking hunt or driven hunt and hunt with hunting dogs from 1st December to 28th February.
The hunting volume of lynx is divided by counties according to the hunting quotas. It is possible to plan the hunting of lynx first of all in big hunting areas. As the success of hunting essentially depends on the snow conditions, RMK does not sell any paid packages of lynx hunting. If possible, the lynx hunting is organized in addition to wild boar hunting. On the average 10 lynx are hunted in the bigger hunting districts like Kilingi-Nõmme or Rakvere-Tudu during the hunting season. As a rule, the adult animals are medal-winning animals.
