Beaver (Castor fiber)

Beaver was destroyed in Estonia as a result of over-hunting in the middle of the 19th century. Beavers repopulated the Estonian territory during the second half of the 20th century and have achieved by now a population of 15 000 animals. Beaver is the biggest rodent in Europe who builds piled up shelters and dams, and cuts down trees. Beaver may remain under water for up to 15 minutes. Kids are born in June. Two adult beavers and their offspring of two previous breeding seasons form the litter. Beaver skin is extremely durable. Bigger animals may weigh over 30 kilograms. Beaver is prey for a wolf and a bear.

Beaver may be hunted using a fyke trap, boundary net, leghold trap, dachshund or terrier from 1st August to 15th March. Beaver may be hunted with a husky from 1st October to 28th February. Beaver may be hunted by hunting from hides, stalking hunt or catching the animal using a dachshund or terrier from 1st August to 15th April. Beaver hunting is allowed throughout the year in case of repeated damages caused by beavers by hunting from hides or stalking hunt or by catching the animal using a dachshund or terrier according to the permit issued by county environmental authority.

Main ways of hunting are hunting from hides and catching the animal with leghold traps. Beaver skulls are appreciated hunting trophies. Beaver hunting is organized in all RMK hunting districts, except on islands.
