Matsalu National Park was founded to protect the numerous nesting, moulting and migratory birds there. The surface area of the protected area is 486.1 km² and it includes Matsalu Bay, the section of Väinamere around the mouth of the bay, the lower course of the Kasari River, bay and river shore canebrakes, the flooding meadow of the Kasari River, inshore pastures, wood meadows and about 50 sea islands. The numbers registered in the national park are 282 bird, 49 fish and 47 mammal species, and 772 species of vascular plants.

RMK is the organiser of visits to Matsalu National Park since February 2009.
